Chapter Sixteen

Zac breathed slowly. He had to time this right.

Shadows thrown by the crystal lights passed by the alleyway before their owners came into view. A group of beings, two Ilutri, a woman with a wide-hemmed skirt... finally, there was the shadow he knew to be Jon’s.

Three, two, one.

He stepped out from behind the wall and bumped directly into the Guardian.

“Oof!”

If it were any other time, he would have laughed at the noise Jon made. As it was, he reached out and grabbed one of Jon’s forearms, double tapping the vial hidden in his coat pocket as he pretended to rub his chest.

“Well met, Jon.” He smiled.

“Well met, Zac.”

For a moment, he found himself lost in the Guardian’s gaze. He’d changed a lot from the young man who he’d patrolled with.

Laughed with.

Fought with.

“Nice night to crash into an old friend,” he said at last.

“We should have that meal now neither of us is holed up in the Healers Centre. Maybe at the Quiver and Quill? Just like old times?” Jon suggested with the quirk of his lips Zac remembered so well.

Zac gazed intently into the Guardian’s eyes, and smiled in triumph when they flashed orange.

Soon it would be just like old times—Jon sitting by his side, no glasses to mar his eyes. Zac’d be able to catch every expression without the filter of glasses to mar his view.

“Sounds amazing. How about in three nights?”

Temira had thought it would work in two, but Zac wanted to be sure.

“I’ll be there,” Jon said.

“I’ll let you get home then. I bid thee well.” Zac grinned and released Jon’s arm.

In two nights, the Guardian would have his sight restored.

And in three nights, Zac had a date.
