From afar, he could see Samira stacking clothes on a vending cart.

They said good morning.

“I’m going back to Tangier,” he told her.

“Won’t you stay with us another day?”

“I can’t. Tomorrow I have to be at work.”

“I wanted to tell you something important—but what was it? I forget so much these days.”

She placed a finger on her cheek.

“Oh, now I remember!” she said. “Don’t tell Dalila’s mother that you saw us here,” then added, “Come back to us someday.”

“What about Dalila, where’s she today?”

“I left her sleeping.”

He smiled at her and said good-bye. She waved. He remembered what his friend Aziz had once told him:

“Sometimes, the feeling of true love is like when you’re traveling in a train, and the girl you love is traveling on a different train going in the opposite direction.”

He turned to her one last time. Her smile looked forlorn.
