It was almost dawn before I found the box of gear I’d stashed by the rest stop. I was soggy, exhausted, and worn to the bone. I had to dig a bit to get the box out, leaving my fingernails with so much dirt under them that no amount of washing at the rest stop bathroom could get them clean. Oh, well. Time would fix that.

There was a bus station not too far down the road, and I had enough cash to buy a ticket to anywhere. It might be risky, though, if the police search for us—for me—reached this far. It probably would.

I sighed and started walking. Alone.
