CHAPTER 5
THE PAGAN EDGE
Orange flames glow in the gas fireplace of my sitting room, dancing a bit of life into the early morning stillness. I am up and wide awake, before the sun, before the wind, before the birds, before another living soul for miles around, or so it seems with me cocooned in such absolute silence.
No shower for me, the salt of Will’s tears and his bergamot scent still linger in my hair and on my face. I slide my hand under my thick, black sweater and clutch Emilie’s string of shiny blue beads, warmed by their closeness to my skin. These are my talismans, precious connections to my new friends that just might help me get through this wretched day.
I log on to my computer; its clock says 5:30. Jules will be calling soon. There is one new e-mail sent late last night, 11:35 eastern time, from Matt.
With a slight tremor, I click on the message, “Wanted to keep you in the loop, Sarah. Will discuss the attached note when you get back from your travels.”
The attached note and its communication trail of previous e-mails are between Matt, Marsha and Trent. I’ve been left out of the picture.
The note is from Matt to Marsha, with a copy to Trent: “Marsha, thanks for your hard work. The draft organization chart and staff changes between the Techstar and Lead Digital teams look interesting. I’m out of the office for the next few days, but let’s get together early next week to continue our discussion.”
For some reason, Matt didn’t see fit to send me the new organization chart and staff changes masterminded by Marsha. This, apparently, is to be left to my imagination.
I scroll down and next find a communication sent by Marsha to Matt and Trent: “Thanks for the excellent meeting yesterday. I think we are making real progress in finalizing our new organization structure for the new year. As you know, Sarah and I have been working hard on this project. The organization chart and reallocation of staff I’ve put together reflect the need to mix up the TechStar and Lead Digital teams to facilitate skill and knowledge transfer between the groups. With the recent changes in senior management, it’s imperative that we move quickly to finalize our new teams and have them in place for a running start at the beginning of January. I look forward to meeting with you both in the near future.”
At the bottom of the page, I find a communication from Trent to Matt and Marsha: “Matt, thanks for asking Marsha about the reorganization plans. I’ve been wondering about them too, especially since Steve’s retirement. Why don’t we meet Tuesday at 1:00 and Marsha can give us an update? Everyone’s calendars are free and I’ve booked the boardroom.”
I shove the computer away from me. Matt initiated this! Matt! He invited Marsha and Trent to play these games. Did they trick him into this somehow? Or is he not the man I’ve always thought him
