SUBJECT: Greetings

Hey Sandi,

How’s my favorite sister-in-law? How’s Mama? I appreciate that you want me to move back to L.A. I do plan to get back to visit soon, but I can never move back. I still have too many bitter memories. Even more, I don’t think I want to live in a city again. So many people moved to the big city to find anonymity and freedom from the prying gossips of their small towns and lost what was the most valuable. All I learned from being a cop in the big city was that I should tell newcomers don’t trust anyone, have several locks on all the doors, keep a close eye on everything they owned, and take advantage of anyone’s vulnerability. And, of course, never look anyone in the eye.

When I moved back to small town living, what a high! Everything is open and unlocked. Even people’s hearts. No one is afraid to park anywhere or leave a house open when they leave. And they can walk anywhere, any time. Obviously there’s no privacy so you can’t do everything you might want to like you can when hiding in the anonymity of the city, but you learn to accept there is a good reason for that. Living with all those social rules that guarantee a safe but boring life is okay with me.

I do understand that the loss of privacy is a problem for some. There was the time that this guy from out of town came looking for a friend who had a job here. He called the Chamber of Commerce, and the person working there said that the friend was shacked up with a woman who lived up Hay Creek Road. He was so upset to be found where he was, he left town the next day.

Then there was this new librarian who was scared spitless when people spoke to her by name wherever she went around town. Her picture had been in the newspaper and everybody recognized her. She left town the same day and mailed the library key back when she got fifty miles away.

My granddad always said small town living is like living with a family that doesn’t always get along. Sometimes it’s fun, and sometimes it’s painful, but you’re always surrounded by people who care and who always help through the hard times.

Sometimes, however, the quiet allows me too much time to think. Sometimes I feel like time has curved in on me, reminding me how much I lost, especially the other day when I ran across my first girlfriend. I don’t know which is more painful right now - looking backward or forward. But Jenna is another story for another day.

Love to the family,

Loni
