Chapter Eight

“So that’s my story,” Kye said as he finished telling Callum about himself. “But it doesn’t seem as interesting as yours. Earth sounds much more incredible than Eurulia.”

“I’m sorry you endured so much on your world,” Callum said. “It puts my qualms into perspective. I don’t have any right to feel the way I do. My life could’ve been much harder.”

“Don’t feel sorry for me. I made it out,” Kye parroted, remembering the last time he’d said the same words. Tylien had been on his mind since the warrior had left him—and in such a state. “What qualms do you have?”

“Trex has been… difficult these last few days. He’s changed since we left Earth, though I get small glimpses of the man I knew. He’s much more aggressive… demanding. He says I’m his mate and that’s simply the way it is, as if I have no say.”

“Well, that is the way with mates,” Kye answered, immediately chuckling at his instinctual response. In their world, a mate wasn’t to be denied. He looked about, ensuring Tylien hadn’t heard him. “Did Earthlings mate differently?”

“We… well, they… had sex and/or married whomever they chose. I spent most of my adult life screwing every female I could get my hands on to fight the need I felt for Trex, so switching to this lifestyle isn’t going to be easy. I still don’t understand this whole mate thing, even though Trex has explained it several times.”

“How would he know more than you in regards to our ways? He was raised on Earth as well, correct?”

Callum nodded. “He was taught who he was by the warriors there with him. I grew up oblivious, thinking we were simply best friends. The lusts I felt, I feared would destroy what we had, so I hid them. Now, I don’t know what we are, exactly, and these feelings… I feel as if there’s a war inside. One minute I want him, the next, I just want my old life back.”

A flicker of jealousy moved within Kye. “Tylien was with me until I was fourteen and then he vanished one day. I missed him so very much. You’re lucky.”

Callum’s smile faltered a little. “Lucky?” He murmured something under his breath. “The grass always appears greener on the other side.”

Kye frowned. “What?”

“An Earth saying. Basically, you don’t know all of the story. What appears lucky to you…” Callum drifted off, staring across the room, looking as if he were deep in thought. “I’ve lost everything in my life.”

“Except him,” Kye said quietly.

The smile that formed on Callum’s face spoke volumes. “Except him. And now I have a new family, don’t I?”

“Yes, it seems we both have a lot to adjust to.”

Callum sighed. “That we do.”

“I have a feeling, with what you feel with Trex, it will work out,” Kye said.

Callum’s smile faded again.

“Do you feel the pull toward him?” Kye asked, his voice low. “I can see the happiness warring with your confusion when you think of him. Your smiles
