CHAPTER 9

Everyone laughed and enjoyed lunch, then York and Timmy left to go for a “walk”. Soon after, Flyer and Ireland went off to do the same thing, and Bull found himself alone with Vano for the first time. “So, uh… would you… uh, would you… like to go for a uh… walk?”

Vano laughed. “No. I think I’m good right here.”

Bull’s eyes went wide. “Oh shit! I didn’t mean that kind of walk. I was talking a real walk. You know, see the lake and stuff. Not that I wouldn’t walk with you any time day or night… but I know you’re not ready… I mean… not that I’m pushing the issue. I’d never do that. I mean… well… you can…”

Vano laughed and held up his hand to get Bull to stop talking. “I know you weren’t trying to suggest going for the same ‘walk’ as the others. It’s okay.” Sighing, Vano sat up straighter and looked at the lake. “Bull, I know that finding your mate is one of the biggest, most wonderful things to happen to a shifter or a paranormal. I’m so sorry you ended up with me.”

“I’m not,” Bull softly replied.

Vano turned to look at Bull. “How can you say that? I’m so screwed up. One second I’m running as fast as I can from you and the next I’m wanting nothing more than to run into your arms. God, anyone that played hot and cold with me like I do with you would find themselves sucking on their own balls.”

“Well, I’m not a contortionist, but I guess I could try doing that in my wolf form,” Bull said with a smile.

Vano snorted, “You know what I’m saying.”

Nodding, Bull quietly replied, “Yes, I do. I also know that you’ve gone through something I can’t even relate to, Vano, but I’m also not going to leave you alone while you fight through your demons. I’m here. If you need to talk, just sit and cuddle in silence, or even yell and scream at… I’m right here and no matter what you do… no matter what you say, I won’t leave you.”

“I want… I want…”

Seeing his mate struggling with his words, but knowing he couldn’t put any into Vano’s mouth, and scared of what Vano might say, but still needing to know, Bull quietly asked, “What do you want? In a Vano perfect world what does Vano want?”

Vano looked back out into the large pool of water. “I don’t know how to answer that.”

“Okay,” Bull replied.

Sighing, Vano said, “I was born into our gypsy tribe just like Deja was, but unlike Deja, I hated it. My parents died when I was a baby and the tribe raised me… or really Cas and Lon did. Ordan, our tribe leader was really nice too and I loved him like a father, but honestly I was never happy.

“Why not?” Bull asked.

Vano gave a sad laugh. “People say they wish they could travel more, but let me tell you traveling isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
