She might not have been able to refuse to take him to the hospital, but she didn’t have to make it easy either, Bella thought half an hour later as she went out to the car, carrying a basket of the plums she had gathered that morning. The day was living up to its early promise, but although the low golden sun was deliciously warm, blue-black clouds had gathered behind it and the air was sharp. So what? she thought sulkily, wrestling with the hood on the MG. They might freeze, they might get soaked, but at least with the top down it would be noisy enough to make conversation impossible.

Olivier emerged from the house, unhurriedly checking his BlackBerry. Letting his gaze flicker casually to where Bella was waiting with ostentatious patience in the open-topped car, he stopped and said sardonically, ‘You do realise how cold it’s going to be driving with the top down?’

‘It’s fine,’ Bella said stiffly. She had given her coat to Julien Moreau yesterday, but this morning, reluctantly aware of what Olivier had said to her that night at the Tate about wearing black, she had put aside her thickest sweater and jeans in favour of a short emerald-green velvet skirt with her boots, and a thin raspberry-pink wraparound cardigan. But he was right, of course. She was going to freeze. Putting down the hood of the car had been stupid, but she’d die of hypothermia before she let him see that. She cast him a supercilious smile.

‘If you’ve quite finished fussing, can we go?’

The hospital to which Julien had been admitted was a modern building just outside Rouen, about twenty minutes’ drive away. After a journey during which neither of them spoke, Bella dropped Olivier at the doorway.

She pulled up beneath a majestic sycamore tree and switched off the engine. He hadn’t bothered taking the basket of plums in, she noticed resentfully, biting into one as she resigned herself to wait. He was right, it was damned cold, and holding the plum between her teeth for a moment she tucked her legs in their long boots up in front of her, wedging them against the steering wheel and wrapping her arms around them.

‘Are you quite comfortable?’

She looked up with a start. Olivier was standing over her, watching her. She blushed and removed the plum from her mouth, hastily wiping away the juice that was running down her chin.

‘That was quick. After twelve years you could only manage ten minutes?’

He opened the driver’s door and took a step back. ‘My father would like to meet you.’

The tone of his voice and the rigid set of his shoulders as he walked slightly ahead of her into the hospital left Bella in no doubt about what he thought about this. She followed him wordlessly up a long corridor, almost colliding with the solid wall of his body as he stopped outside a door and buzzed to gain admittance.

His face was like granite, the two frown lines between his brows more deeply carved than ever.
