THIRTY-SEVEN

THE COTTAGE | GULF BREEZE, FLORIDA

As Sharon headed to the cottage with Ben, she was glad to escape Victoria’s scrutiny. The old woman was far more inquisitive and cantankerous than she remembered. And far more likely to come gunning for anybody she perceived as a threat to Jen.

The night was one of those picture-perfect evenings. The sky was lit by starlight, the water lapping softly at the shore. The moon painting a silver path over the bay. Even the few blooms left on the butchered oleander glowed in the dark. Tropical. Mysterious.

Still… none of it made Jen’s war-hawk of a grandmother any less intimidating.

Sharon inched closer to Ben, as if he offered protection from his own grandmother-in-law. He didn’t let go of her arm until they reached the cottage door.

“Thanks for the escort, Ben. I’ll be okay now.”

“I’m coming inside to make sure Matt’s not lurking behind the doors.”

A horrible thought. Would the mention of his name always make her cringe?

Except for the two of them turning on lights as they walked from room to room, the cottage was empty. Ben wanted to stay and escort her back, but Sharon finally convinced him that the security guards were on the job, and Matt hadn’t tried to sneak onto the property in days.

She had to have a minute to herself. She needed to process the turn of events—Victoria’s arrival, Jen’s remarkable recovery, the imminent return of the sexy swim coach, and even the new aggressiveness of Ben’s legal assistant. That ploy with the soup, and now this bogus work on Saturday. Who did that Antonia creature think she was fooling? She was worse than Maria Ramos. More subtle. Smarter. And both of them were trying to take Jen’s husband.

How was Sharon possibly going to take care of her friend with a whole menagerie hovering nearby? Still, hadn’t she handled worse?

Sharon dug out her swimsuit and coverup, found a favorite rosy lipstick she’d left on the dressing table, a smaller purse and a big tote. She was very fond of purses and totes, and had brought four from Eutaw, purchased secretly over the course of two years with cash siphoned from the food budget. Not designer bags like Jen had, but knockoffs good enough to fool most anybody. Who knew when she would get to go back to Alabama to collect the rest of her belongings?

Thinking of Alabama brought back an avalanche of memories so horrifying, she had to sit down a minute, just to catch her breath. She had known running away would be complicated, but she never imagined anything like this.

Shortly, her cell phone beeped. An incoming message. From Matt. Of course it was.

But wait. How did he get the number to her burner phone?

Never mind. The message was already there. It leaped out at her, as scary as if Matt himself had walked through the door with his fists already balled.

Don’t think you can win, Sharon. You WILL come home, even if I have to haul you back from that over-the-top house by the hair of your head.
