She had me hooked. I couldn’t stop thinking about waking up next to her in my bed, her hair falling in waves across her shoulders and face. I regretted the move I had made by trying to help her with her finance class. One of my weakness, trying to take care of everything for the people I care for. The person I cared for, the one I wanted but seemed to continue to push away.

I stopped myself from thinking about it as my phone vibrated with a text from Summer. I grinned to myself, excited to hear from her. I hadn’t ever meant to hurt her but I did. I knew Summer was nothing like Hannah or the other women I had been with. She didn’t rely on me to provide for her or spoil her. I liked that, surprisingly. It was a breath of fresh air.

Now, at least, perhaps I’d get a chance to explain that to her.

I’ll be at your place in an hour, I texted her.

I looked down at my black pants and pressed shirt and decided on something more casual. I always tried to look the part of the serious executive, but today I needed to be the guy that could make a girl see that he really cared for her.

She didn’t like that our relationship was a secret, and I didn’t either, but I didn’t think she understood just how awful making our relationship public could be for her. I had learned from Hannah and I wasn’t going to make a similar mistake with Summer, but I did understand her need for ending the secrecy. We would have to figure something out, carefully.
