Chapter Twenty-One

Monk

What have I done? All this discipline, all my hard work— Have I thrown it all away?

It took me years to reach this point. I worked on myself and my craft. I denied myself sex, food, drugs— everything.

Now, in one night, is it all gone?

Should I call Tom?

I shouldn’t.

Not in this state.

Looking over at Blythe sleeping on the bed, I shook my head. She was so hot, but I had broken my rules to be with her.

Am I going crazy?

What’s wrong with me?

Picking up my phone, I quietly walked out of the bedroom and closed the door. This was an existential crisis. I had to talk to my spiritual advisor. I just hoped to God or the Forces Above that he would answer.

“Friend Monk? Hey, buddy,” greeted Tom. “What’s wrong?”

“Thank God you answered,” I said, a little desperately. “Tom, I feel like I’m coming apart.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, now. Calm down. Tell me everything,” he soothed.

“I met this girl,” I began.

“Isn’t that always the way?” he asked.

“She’s more than just some girl. She’s my co-star in this movie we’re shooting,” I explained. “We had some hot scenes together and there was a mutual attraction. But you know me, normally I don’t engage in that kind of thing when I’m working. I take my typical vow of chastity, you know? But this time I broke it. This threatens everything I’ve worked for! What am I going to do, Tom? What am I going to do?”

“Friend Monk, the first thing you’re going to do is to get yourself centered,” he suggested.

“You mean meditate. Like right now?” I asked.

“Yes, I’ll wait. You go ahead,” he said. “Once you’re centered, pick up the phone again.”

I set down the phone, got into position and did my breathing. After a few minutes, I felt more calm and centered.

“Okay,” I exhaled. “I’m centered again.”

“Great!” said Tom cheerfully. “So, this girl you mentioned. Are you in love with her? Honestly.”

“I think so, maybe,” I said. “I’ve only known her a few weeks, but I ached for her. And tonight, we finally had sex after dating and working together.”

“Well, I could see where there might be some stress in dating a co-worker, especially in the environment of today’s Hollywood,” said Tom. “I assume she feels the same way about you?”

“Yes, but there’s a complication,” I revealed.

“What’s that?”

“She’s also dating my other co-stars, Zack and Christian,” I said. “I think she’s into both of them as well. I’m not sure who will win.”

“Win?” he said. “Now what’s winning look like?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “She wants to date us all, but— I guess, I would just date her?”

“But that’s not what she wants,” he said. “Is that what you want?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I want her, I know that. I just had sex with her. I broke my vow.”

“Well, that was a vow to yourself and what was that really about? It was about your craft, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, has it adversely effected your acting ability in anyway?” he asked.

“Well, no. Not yet,” I said.
