Chapter Eleven

A week later, Alexis perched on a kitchen stool, sipping her coffee, while she thought about the upcoming weekend. She’d planned to run up to her parents’ house, but now she didn’t want to go. With only weeks of school left, there were several things to wrap up here. Plus there were…other things keeping her here. For one, James had missed the Thursday-night Bible Study, and she’d promised to type her notes to help him catch up.

She imagined spending extra time helping James study Hebrews. Just the two of them…

Nibbling a slice of toast, she pushed the thought around. Why was he so…interesting? James wasn’t at all her type of man—she usually went for men who were career oriented. And she and James had had only two genuine dates!

And a few kisses—three, to be exact. Kisses that sent her reeling.

With a twist of her mouth, she wadded her paper napkin and gathered up her dishes. She didn’t want to examine that thought too closely. The kisses from James made her nervous, even as she wanted more. But after the school year ended, there might never be another kiss. Even with her former plans to get married up in smoke, she wasn’t likely to hang around Sunny Creek for the summer. What would she do here without school in session? What would keep her?

By the time she returned next year, nothing much would be left of this attraction between her and James. Next year would change everything. Every school year had its own personality, its own makeup of students and parents. Cliff would have a different teacher.

Under the circumstances, that was better.

Anyway, a purely physical attraction wasn’t enough to build a lifetime on. There had to be more.

Sighing, she washed her few dishes. She did have to finish those vests by the end of the week.

She’d better let her mother know not to expect her. Alexis punched in her parents’ phone number, ready with a long explanation. “Hi, Mom. I—”

“Oh, Alexis, honey,” her mother interrupted. “I was just about to call you. I know you were planning to come home this weekend, but Dad and I have to fly out to Denver. Your aunt Helen has taken a fall, and I fear she’s broken a hip.”

“Oh dear.” Alexis sank down on the edge of her bed. “That’s too bad. Is she going to be all right?”

“The doctor says it may take some time for her to recover,” her mom rushed on to say. “And she has good care, I’m sure, but I think we need to be there to make sure she’s all right. We’re family.”

“Yes, I can see that you need to go.”

“The only thing is, your sister can’t take care of Pepper…”

Pepper, a small black schnauzer, had been the family dog since Alexis was thirteen. Old now, he was babied by her mom, who claimed Pepper was a good stand-in until she had grandchildren.

“That is a problem. How about I come and get Pepper and bring him back with me?” It was an easy decision to make.
