1. Dante, THE DIVINE COMEDY, translated by Dorothy Sayers (1949-62). There are occasional moments when a culture, the church, and an individual person converge in such a way that everything comes together with a sense of wholeness, completion. This is one of those occasions. Virtually everything that goes into the making of spirituality - the distortions, the failures, the trials, the achievements, the blessings - are arranged and ordered, put into rhythms and metaphors, and then narrated in such a way that we can see where our experience fits into the whole. This is also the most extensive analysis of sin, especially spiritual sin, that we have.

2. John Milton, PARADISE LOST (1667). Spirituality is primarily about God; secondarily it is about sin. For all our seeking or being sought by God takes place in an environment of the most subtle seductions to defy or evade God. Milton's imagination gets behind the appearances of morality and exposes the complex subtleties of negative spirituality, the antispirituality that is constantly at work undermining and eroding God-obedience, Godseeking, God-receiving. Christians need to be learned in this subject, and Milton is a good master.
