At lunch, Charlie handed Sam an invitation. “From your grandmother. It’s for tonight. We should go.”

“I haven’t seen her in eight years, Charlie,” Sam said. “Plus, she’s a mean and bitter old woman.”

Kate put down her forkful of salad. She’d read the stories in the paper, but it didn’t feel right to mention it out loud—in front of the cameras.

“She disowned you,” Charlie said.

Apparently Charlie had no qualms about it. Kate frowned in his direction, feeling protective of Sam. She glanced at Sam, to see if he was okay, but his expression gave nothing away.

“Why did she send an invitation?” she asked.

Sam smiled thinly. “To see us fail.”

“How? Surely she’s not so powerful.”

“My grandmother—or La Grande Dame as she prefers—is old Hollywood royalty. She knows everyone and will ruin someone’s career if she wants to. And trust me, she’s going to want to make sure we don’t succeed.”

“Do we have to go?”

“Yes, of course,” Charlie said. “No one says no to La Grande Dame. Well, except for Sam, of course.”

Sam looked resigned. “We’ll go. But, Kate, prepare for the worst.”
