Chapter Three

Brandon pulled up to his daughter’s house a good twenty minutes after he was supposed to arrive. He’d been too distracted thinking about Crispin to focus on the time. And now his girl would probably make him pay for it in some way. Last time she’d had him do the dishes.

Hopefully it would be just as easy to appease her now.

He stepped out of his car, locking the door behind him. Her mother, were she still alive, would have told him not to fuss with it. Kylie and her soon to be husband, Marcus, lived in a quiet street in a well kept little area of Denver. But she was still in the city and he was careful. So the locking continued.

Their house was what realtors would have called quint, maybe even a classic fifties retro.

It was a good size for the two of them and maybe even a baby someday down the line, but he’d grown up in a big family, as had her mother, and so he knew the chances of their family staying small were slim. But, ultimately, it was up to them how many kids they wanted. He was just hoping for one or two little ones. A boy to play baseball with and a girl to... well he wasn’t quite sure. Kylie hadn’t been the typical girl her childhood friends had been. He’d taken her rock climbing and caving before most of her friends had learned their fractions. Weekends spent camping in Rocky Mountain National Park were more common than tea parties and dress up. He frowned, having a moment of uncertainty that he’d done his best by her after her mother had died.

Thankfully his moment didn’t last long as Marcus opened the door, his black and blue spiky hair sticking up wildly. As usual Brandon had to resist the urge to reach out and touch those spikes. He’d been wondering if they felt like porcupine quills ever since Kylie had brought Marcus home one college break to meet him. He was a good man and Brandon had no reservations about him. He just could not shake his fascination with the man’s thick head of short spikes.

“Brandon, good to see you. I’m glad you could come. Kylie has been so excited to try this new pumpkin soup recipe out on you,” Marcus said, ushering him inside and taking his coat.

“Mmm, sounds good.” Despite knowing Marcus for years, there was still an awkward moment of silence as they stood in the doorway together. Their small house was bright with lots of natural sunlight and nearly every one of Kylie’s favorite colors painted on some wall of the house. Across from him was a pale yellow he remembered Kylie calling something along the lines of Butterscotch Bliss. He’d have called it sort of yellowish but maybe that was why all the walls in his house were still painted the white they’d been when he’d bought it. The realtor had marketed the house as being customizable and a black slate.
