Reese’s tinkling laughter echoed as I trudged in my front door. I choked back a groan. I was in no mood to listen to her and my dad flirting, no matter how cute—and a little sickening—they were.

“Hey, Dad,” I called as I shuffled toward the stairs. “Hey, Reese.” They leaned against the island in the kitchen, giggling at something on Reese’s phone.

My dad peeked up from the screen. “How was school?”

“Fine.” I waved. “I’ve got homework.” I hurried up the steps before he could ask me to join them.

I closed the door in my room and dropped my bag on the floor near my desk. My body froze as the glistening object on my bed caught my attention. Hot fists clenched my gut. Another damn nefa.

Who the frack kept leaving these? It had to be that no good, evil fallen angel occasionally possessing Austin.

I grabbed the fleshy orb and tossed it into my wastebasket, tying the bag tight. The sweet, sinful smell wafted through the plastic. My mouth watered.

Crap. I should take it outside, but the lovebirds might try to ensnare me into a conversation. I grabbed a stack of old magazines, tossing them into the top of the trashcan to block the intoxicating aroma.

My lips curled into a grimace. That would have to do.

The end of this day had turned into a total suck fest. Jayson had somewhat gotten me on board with his search for this black market amulet, but after Astaroth’s visit, I was freaking out again. Maybe the fallen angel was trying to scare me into forcing Jayson to stop. Astaroth had every reason to convince me this was a bad idea. He didn’t want my visions to end.

I shed my jacket and kicked my boots off. I needed some music. Pronto.

I plucked the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac from my shelf and gently laid it on the record player. “The Chain” spilled over the speakers. I backed up and collapsed on my bed.

I had no idea what to believe. Jayson was trying to save my sanity, but it could cost him his soul. Or he really was strong enough to resist letting this shadow self out—if that was even a real thing and not some ridiculous lie Astaroth concocted.

A knock tapped on my door.

I pressed my face into my pillow to stifle a groan. “Come in,” I muttered.

“Oh, um, I can come back…?”

The shy, uncertain voice had my head snapping up. Colton peeked into my room, his bottom lip snagged in his teeth.

I rolled onto my back and sat up. “You’re fine. Come in.”

Colton slipped inside but hung just near the open door. He jerked his thumb over his shoulder. “Your dad said you were up here. I was wondering if you had any notes on The Grapes of Wrath I could borrow. Mrs. Morgan is having me do a makeup test tomorrow.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels.

“Sure.” We’d covered it a couple of weeks ago, and Jessica had helped me study.
