Chapter Twelve

Mara

When I finally managed to get word to Cassius about what was happening on Earth, he prepared to engage in yet another battle to save his world. But thanks to Quinn’s quick magical portal which granted me a fast visit with Cassius, I was able to persuade him not to.

“It will only end in destruction if you engage with Rebus,” I said. “That is exactly what he wants.”

“He wants destruction?” Cassius asked. “He wants to destroy the very world that he is set to inherit?” He shook his head sadly and sighed. “It’s just as the prophecy has predicted.”

“It’s not just the prophecy that foretold the destruction of Mystreuce,” I said. “And it’s not just Rebus that wants it. The ancient one wants it too.”

“What? Why?”

“I’m not quite sure yet, but trust me when I say that the ancient one is a lot more vile than any of us realized.”

“I don’t want you to stay on Earth with Rebus,” he pleaded. “It’s too dangerous. If he finds out that you’re spying on him—”

“He won’t,” I interrupted. “But you need to take everyone on Mystreuce underground. Rebus is going to launch an attack and he is set to decimate everyone in his path.”

“I’m not sure that going underground will help. It might just end up sealing our tomb down there when he finds us.”

“I don't think he will find you if you take everyone into the abandoned vampire caverns under the surface to hide.”

“But isn’t he leading a vampire army?” Cassius asked.

“Yes, but they are all newly created vampires. None of them will have any knowledge or memory of the vampire caverns because none of them were ever in them. These new vampires haven’t been anywhere but Earth. They will have no idea that there is another whole level beneath the ground on Mystreuce.”

“It might work,” he said. “To my knowledge, no one has ever told Rebus about the vampire tunnels either.”

“I don’t think so,” I agreed. “Which means that he won’t know they’re there either, making it the perfect place to hide and keep everyone safe. When Rebus comes to conquer you, he won’t find you there.”

“Promise me that you’ll be safe,” Cassius said as he held my face in his hands and kissed me softly. “Our time is almost up.” Any more than a few minutes away would raise suspicion.

“I promise,” I answered. “You do the same.”

With one last kiss, we both went back to separate worlds for the time being, and awaited the attack that Rebus was planning. It didn’t take long.

When Rebus invaded Mystreuce, it was just as Cassius and I had predicted. Rebus found that the entire city had been abandoned and evacuated.

“Where is everyone?” he shouted in frustration. “Where did they all go?”

He looked at me and I simply shrugged my shoulders and feigned ignorance.

“Maybe Quinn sent them all somewhere else by using his magic,” I suggested.

“Even he isn’t powerful enough to have sent that many people somewhere at once. Besides, why would he think to send anyone anywhere unless he was expecting an attack.
