They have decided that the entertainment value of their iPod and ear buds is worth not being able to hear what is going on around them. They have decided that the security of a table where you can sit with your back to the wall is not worth the inconvenience of the wait. Whether or not they know it, they have a mindset that values convenience over the awareness that is necessary for good personal security.

In the story of Gideon’s men, drinking from cupped hands was not the convenient way to drink. It probably took longer to get a good drink. It would have been much faster and easier to stick your face in the water and gulp it up, but they had a mindset that valued awareness over convenience.
