He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

ISAIAH 40:29

“ORDINARY STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION”

Ever wondered where the phrase “quarterback sack” came from? Look to the premier defensive end of the 1960s, David “Deacon” Jones.

“I did come up with the term sack to describe the devastation I was bringing on the poor, cringing quarterbacks in the NFL,” Jones said. “I thought it was lots better than saying, ‘Jones tackles the QB behind the line for another loss of yardage.’ … It had a ring to it, and it caught on with the sportswriters. But I tell you, doing it was a lot more fun than talking about it.”

Jones was always one to speak his mind. Whiners were a favorite target: “You think society is to blame for the mess you made of yourself?” he asked. More positively, Jones said, “It took me a long time to figure out that real big-time success comes from taking lots of small, ordinary steps in the right direction. And you can’t ever take the next step until you take the first.”

Jones’s quarterback-terrifying steps led to his being named to the Pro Bowl eight times. After a fourteen-year career with the Rams, Chargers, and Redskins, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980 in his first year of eligibility. Ultimately, Jones was named to the 1960s All-Decade Team and the All-Time NFL Team in 2000.

Known as the “Secretary of Defense,” Jones knew his role and played it with everything he had. His philosophy and career are reminiscent of our spiritual walk as described in 1 Corinthians 15:58: “Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Giving ourselves to God’s work is what transforms us from spectators to participants, from ineffective to powerful. Be bold. Take that first step. Then take another.
