De Leon (2000) also identified certain key assumptions that characterize a TC belief system, the first being the belief that a TC approach is effective, followed by the belief that the community-as-method approach facilitates change. This approach is a social learning process, where residents learn from observing each other and themselves. Importantly, the TC as a community, rather than a single therapist or counsellor, is the healing force that facilitates individual change. Residents assume responsibility for their behaviour and they are deemed to be able to change and become responsible members of mainstream society (Kooyman 1993).

Perfas (2003, p.129) adds the following: ‘The belief in the inherent goodness of man’ – residents are not judged by their past, but by what they do in the here and now to correct their mistakes – and the belief in helping another person help themselves, i.e. the willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ to support a fellow resident. These assumptions also underpin the approach of the Ley Community, which as previously stated, is an addiction TC, accredited by the ‘Community of Communities’.
