Chapter Twenty-One

When we found the entrance to the second floor, I was amazed that we’d gotten here so quickly. Not much more than an hour had passed since we departed our school, which was a great increase in speed compared to the prior day.

We didn’t have nearly as much to show for it in terms of levels, stats, or spells, but I felt we were in much better shape as a team than we were before.

Still, it was daunting for us to step onto the second floor, especially when we came upon the opulent hallway where we’d been betrayed yesterday.

“Never trust a drow elf,” muttered Brielle under her breath as we marched by the spot in the wall. “Or anyone in the dungeon for that matter.”

I didn’t say anything in return, mostly because I was too busy listening. My subconscious kept reminding me that our chances of finding the Trugalla brothers was greatest at this particular spot, and I kept one ear out for any noise on the horizon just in case we were bound to run into them again.

Fortunately for us, this part of the dungeon was as silent as a crypt. The creepy palace interior soon dialed down, replaced by boring gray walls that were completely unadorned with anything resembling decoration. Even the majestic, carpeted floors were soon replaced by dull, sandstone tile—the kind that made your footsteps echo with every move.

There just wasn’t much to look at right now. At one point, we came across two small, wooden doors on either side of the hallway, but both of them were locked once we tried the handles. Nevertheless, we kept pressing forward.

I had a feeling something was coming, if only because we hadn’t faced any threats on this floor yet. I was waiting for a monster to appear, but what we came upon next still managed to stop us in our tracks.

“Uh, guys,” said Vinny. “That kinda looks like a gate. Like a big-ass, massive gate to some super-max prison or something.”

Vinny wasn’t exaggerating. We rounded a corner to find a large gate that was nearly double our height. It covered the entire face of the wall, except for a one-foot panel on either side. The gate was made of black-colored steel, with bars coming in intervals of every couple inches. I could see that the landscape changed once we got to the other side of it, being replaced with a jungle-like setting with thick foliage and trees.

“We’re stuck here for now,” said Brielle, resting her hands against the steel gate. “Or we need to find another way.”

“Or we need a key,” I said, inspecting the panel on the left side of the gate. “Look at this, Brielle.”

Once she was next to me, I used my finger to indicate a spot where a key could be inserted. It was one of those old-timey keys—the kind that you see in movies that had the loop on one end and were usually made of gold. When I inspected the other side, I could see another keyhole, for a similar but different key.
