5.1 Introduction: What are CNT Fibers and Why Do they Form Interesting Hybrids and Composites?
This book chapter discusses nanocarbonâbased hybrids in the sense of the hybrid concept pioneered by D. Eder, as a combination of a nanocarbon with an inorganic material with similar domain size and a strong interaction, often as a result of direct growth of the inorganic in situ, in the presence of the nanocarbon [1â3]. The resulting hybrid is characterized by a large interface and a large surface area, features that are attractive for energy conversion and transfer processes. In this context, hybrids have been typically distinguished from composites in terms of the degree of integration of the two phases, the strength of their interaction and the ease of charge transfer.
Here, we describe the recent work on a particular type of nanocarbon hybrid that is comprised of carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) and inorganic compounds. Rather than presenting an exhaustive literature review on general hybrid properties, we describe materials science challenges associated with the synthesis of CNTFâbased hybrids, characterize their structural and optoelectronic properties, and discuss their application in energy storage and conversion. We also evaluate the recent progress on interfacial characterizations in terms of chemical composition, transport properties and electronic structure. Most of the work discussed here was carried out in our research group over the last eightâyears. This enables us to provide a more complete storyline that will hopefully be more instructive to readers, particularly those venturing into this field for the first time.
