Classification Steps 8–9: Finally, classification and prioritization at Layer 3 (Classification 8 and 9) always takes precedence over Layer 2 (Classification 4 to 7). This holds regardless of what parameters within the packets are used in the Layer 3 classification. This classification case includes the five-tuple Layer 3 parameters (source/destination IP addresses, UDP/TCP protocol, source/destination port numbers) and Layer 4 ACL specifications in the Layer 3/Layer 4 packet flow. For IP routing purposes, the Layer 3/Layer 4 flow filter configured in the switch/router may simply be determined by the Layer 3 destination address used during the IP forwarding table lookup process or the filter may be taken from a Diffserv (DS) override/rewrite designed to override/rewrite all Layer 2 default classifications.
