Chapter
Ten
WITHOUT CONSCIOUS THOUGHT, Nancy hurled herself at Franz and Monique. She caught them low and shoved them out of the way.
A split second later the boulder crashed past them, missing them by inches. Nancy actually felt the ground lurch beneath her feet. Another shower of dirt and rocks rained down from the ledge, and a bird screamed from somewhere up in the sky. Then all was quiet again.
âWow.â Nancy sat up and pushed the hair out of her eyes. âThat was too close.â
Monique gaped at the boulder now blocking their path. âThat rock must be six feet across,â she breathed. âHow could an accident like this happen? These trails are very well maintained.â
âMaybe it wasnât an accident,â Franz said, glancing nervously about him. âI bet someone pushed that boulder and meant to hit me with it!â
At that exact moment Mick came racing back down the trail. âI just saw a man on the ledge above you!â he gasped. âThen I heardâAre you all right?â he asked, pale with shock.
âBarely,â Nancy replied. âWhat did the man you saw look like?â
âHe was a big chap. Blond hair,â Mick said. âAnyway, he took one look at me and took off.â
âOh, no,â Monique whispered. âIt was Bart! He really is trying to kill you, Franz. Itâs time I put a stop to this,â she added. âIâm going to call my parents to tell them whatâs going on.â
âI wouldnât do that just yet,â Nancy said quickly. âIt would only give Bart a chance to back off and cover his tracks.â
âIf he doesnât know we suspect him,â Mick added, âwe can catch him in the actââ
âAnd heâll go to jail,â Nancy finished.
âBut that means Franz will be aâwhat do you call it?âa decoy,â Monique protested.
âI donât mind,â Franz said staunchly. âNot if it helps us catch Bart.â
Monique finally agreed to wait a few more days before speaking to her parents.
âNow, we should head over to our first rendezvous point and tell the others whatâs been going on.â
âFine,â Franz agreed. He took a step up the trail, then paused to glance at Nancy curiously. âWhy donât you tell Monique and me why youâre here? We didnât expect to find you on the mountain with us, you know.â
âWell, when you stood up Bess and George and me at that café yesterday morning, we got curiousâ
âOh, my, I totally forgot our meeting when Monique called and suggested we get away. I am sorry,â Franz said apologetically.
As the four of them inched around the boulder and made their way to the first rendezvous point, Nancy and Mick explained further why they had come after Franz. Before long, they reached Bess, George, and Erich. The three of them were delighted to see Franz safe and soundâand horrified when they heard how narrowly they all had escaped being killed.
âI told you this mountain wasnât safe. Letâs get out of here!â Bess cried. âI think we should take the first train back to Geneva.â
âWait a minute.â Now that he was out of danger,
