Chapter Ten
When Emma woke up the following morning, the only evidence that Cort had actually stayed in the room was a pillow and a neatly folded blanket on the chair next to the door. She’d lain awake in tense anticipation for what had seemed like hours, waiting for him to come up. She’d arranged a place for him on the floor with some extra blankets and pillows, and had left the bathroom light on with the door cracked. Her nerves had been raw just thinking about him sleeping in such close quarters, and she was certain she wouldn’t sleep a wink, knowing he was within arm’s reach. But she must have been more exhausted than she realized, because she hadn’t heard him come upstairs, or leave again at dawn.
She showered quickly, and then stood in front of her closet and looked at the outfits she’d brought with her from New York. Already, the day promised to be warm and humid, and none of the dresses or tight jeans she’d packed appealed to her.
On impulse, she opened her dresser and saw her old clothes neatly folded inside. These were what she’d always referred to as her “ranch clothes.” Comfortable cotton pants and shorts, T-shirts, and button-downs. On impulse, she pulled on a pair of brown cotton shorts and a white T-shirt with a deeply scooped neck and cap sleeves. She brushed her hair into a ponytail and slipped her feet into a pair of flat sandals. Except for a sweep of mascara and some lip gloss, she left her face devoid of makeup. Surveying herself in the mirror, she thought her mother would hardly recognize her. When she finally made her way downstairs, the house was already buzzing with activity.
“There you are.” Rosa-Maria beamed when Emma entered the kitchen. “Breakfast is on the terrace this morning, and your papa is already out there.”
“Are the guys back yet?” she asked, trying to sound casual.
“Not yet.”
Emma poured herself a cup of coffee and carried it out to the terrace. The morning air was warm, and a soft breeze carried the scent of wildflowers and freshly mown grass. Emma paused for a moment and breathed deeply. The breakfast table had been set for five, but only her father was there, reading a newspaper.
“Good morning, Daddy,” she said, and dropped a kiss onto his cheek.
Gus folded his newspaper and set it to one side. “Good morning, darlin’. How did you sleep?”
“Like a baby,” she admitted. “I never heard Cort leave this morning.” She looked out across the property toward the wedding tent, where several container trucks were parked. The sweeping lawn was covered with workmen, as the final preparations for the wedding ceremony were made. Beyond the tent, she could see the barns and outbuildings, but there was no sign of Cort or her brothers. “Shouldn’t they be back by now?”
Gus chuckled. “Don’t fret. They’ll be by shortly.” He looked up and smiled as Rosa-Maria carried a tray out to the terrace and began setting dishes on the table.
