Having spent more than twenty years in the fitness industry, I understand why people think this way. When we talk about losing weight, we preach about how it’s a simple “calories in and calories out” process. Burn more than you consume each day, and you will lose weight. Then why would we want to ruin what we worked so hard to achieve, taking in calories immediately after we have burned them off?

It’s simple. You’re going to take in calories later in the day anyway, but the sooner you take them in, the better. If you work out at 8 a.m., waiting until 12 noon to eat will actually be a detriment rather than a positive. You will not only lose the opportunity to take in your recovery nutrition during the optimal metabolic window of time, but you will also most likely end up eating more throughout the day rather than less as a result of waiting to eat.

Our bodies work optimally when they are fed good food constantly, generally every three hours or so. Waiting until you are ravenous, making poor food choices, and then overeating as well is a recipe for disaster, yet these are common eating habits. When you feed your body a constant mix of high-quality carbohydrates and protein, it hums along like a well-fueled performance vehicle.
