Chapter Fourteen

“GEMINI!” ROSE PUSHED through the barrier of men in front of her as demons charged toward him. Teeth broke flesh on the arm she held up to block the assault. Her other arm swung, sword removing heads.

“Get her back,” Gemini shouted the order with the same tone he used as a general on his home realm. “Rose, I’ve got this.” As he spoke, he took down the demons that were now on top of him.

Rose brushed off the hands of soldiers who were trying to pull her back. “Everyone look forward.”

The demons came in waves that spilled from the darkness around them, outnumbering the witches in seconds. All of them honed in on her, making Gemini a target, since he fought pressed against her.

Antares grabbed her and shoved her behind him with a surprising force. “Circle her, all of you.”

The still air was scented with a mix of char, perspiration, and blood. It hung thick with magical tension and testosterone. Growls and grunts blended in a way that made it hard to determine if the sounds next to them were human or demon.

“This is my command.” Rose shoved against Antares who seemed to be trying to singlehandedly keep her out of the fray. With a second attempt she pushed out of the group. “Gemini, take the back of the circle.” She needed him out of her line of sight. He didn’t require her protection and she was taken off guard by how instinctual her response was to him being harmed. Matvei told her the bond they had would be deep, it was. “Antares, watch that side.” She pointed her sword to her right and commanded another lead man to the left side.

While she fought, her mind stayed focused on demons and landing her sword effectively. The sounds of men fighting floated in and out of her awareness as she kept a picture in her mind of where her men were.

The demons came in groups, each larger than the one before. Soldiers found themselves pushed against each other as they were surrounded. She knew they would be more vulnerable like this. Matvei only suggested this formation to protect her in the center. She was not in the center, nor would she be. It went against all of her training to stand idle and command from a position of safety.

Her orders floated over the din of battle as she separated them into smaller squads. With a few shouts, new plans were enacted. The air filled with magic and she yelled out, reminding them that demons were not affected by elements.

Now that they were more mobile, it left them free to aid each other if one squad became overrun, which did happen as they were rolled over by the sheer numbers. They fought like that, managing to hold their ground until Radimir returned.

When he stepped on the realm some demons fled, and the ones that didn’t found themselves either torn to shreds by Radimir, or beheaded by a witch’s blade. The sounds shifted from war to heavy breathing and a few shouts of celebration.
