As you can see, the OPEN SELF is seen by everyone. You don’t try to hide anything. What you see is what you get! In the HIDDEN SELF you do things that are known only to you and you are able to keep things under wraps so to speak. In the BLIND SELF, there are things you do that you are unaware of that others are aware of. And in the UNKNOWN SELF, you do things that are unknown to others as well as yourself, at least consciously.

When it comes to habits, addictions and some mental health disorders, the HIDDEN SELF usually rules in the beginning or outset of most substance use/abuse. The individual who engages in secret activities is usually able to keep their habit which leads to an addiction under lock and key. They are able to control the use, situation and circumstances of use. Most people, even those closest to them have no idea that things may be growing out of control for the user.

When things get progressively worse and bad habits or addiction kicks in, then the individual moves more into OPEN SELF where they are less discreet with their use and abuse of the substance. In fact, many make their substance abuse problem appear in total control as well as incorporating publicly as part of their persons or lifestyle. As the use/abuse gets worse, those closest to them begin to identify red flags and may even bring them to the attention of the user. Of course they downplay it!

When the use and abuse escalates into an out of control habit or addiction, then the BLIND SELF becomes more prevalent. This is when the substance user begins lacking control and doing things they are unaware of or cross the line of social acceptance. This is when bitter resistance kicks in and they become in denial of their problem. This is also the point individuals close to them are most likely to be more vocal and encourage them to seek outside help. The user resists them. The more they push the user to get help the more the user resists as they feel others are trying to place them in a position of inferiority.

It is at this phase in the process that the user decides if their ego will rule and they will continue on their downward spiral, or if they will admit that they need help. When they admit they need help, then they move into the next phase of the first Beatitude for healing...seeking help!
