I mean to run to him and throw myself into his arms and whisper those words in his ear, but my feet don’t move. Siegfried is telling a story. Our story. The tale of how he met a beautiful girl in the woods and fell in love with her.

The problem is, I don’t recognize myself in the story. There’s nothing unique to me in his words. No compliment that couldn’t apply to a hundred other beautiful girls. Odile smiles, basking in his generic praise.

Ten

Grohnk is back at the window, whistling softly and begging me to come with him before I transform back into a swan. I feel the magic pulling at my skin. Rothbart feels it too. His gaze meets mine across the room, and he scowls. He didn’t think I would come. Didn’t think I had to strength to hike this far in the woods at night or the courage to face him.

But I do. And I have.

I step towards Siegfried.
