Chapter Eighteen

Katy fretted about the beginning of the big job this morning. Frank tried to calm her down but he was excited as well. If they pulled it off, the company would be well on the road to recovery.

She radioed to Buster as soon as she was in. The drivers had all left the gravel yard in East Sooke at seven, starting with their first loads. She talked to Renwick and then called Ken, the owner-operator that Frank had hired. She liked him. Middle aged and professional, he had a quirky sense of humour.

Then she called Sterns, the second man Frank had recruited. “He’s good and can do the job,” Frank warned her, “But he gets cranky so don’t take any guff.”

Organizing her day sheets for the Mikkleson job, she added them to the stack Frank had already created and went in to put them on Brett’s desk. It was finally quiet in the office, everyone out driving and no one calling on the dispatch radio.

Sighing, she sank into Brett’s big leather chair. Her feet barely touched the floor but she gave a push with her toe and it swung around. Laughing she pushed again and had to grab the edge of the desk to slow down. The blotter flipped onto the floor.

Oops. She giggled to herself. If she was going to play around in the boss’s office, she’d better not disturb anything. Picking it up, she tossed it back on his desk, then grabbed her papers and stacked them together before laying them in the middle of the blotter. Then her hand stilled.

There was a note on the blotter in Frank’s handwriting, ‘Bruno’, with a phone number. It wasn’t the number she had for Bruno Morelli but he didn’t answer that one anymore, it had been disconnected. Could be a coincidence, there was more than one man named Bruno in town.

But it was odd, the name written there like a note to call him. Slowly reaching for a pen she wrote the number down on a square of paper, tucking it into her pocket. The dispatch squawked and she ran into the outer office to answer it.

“I’ll pick you up at eleven.”

Katy glanced at him from beneath lowered lashes, then straightened the phone until it was aligned perfectly with the edge of her desk. “Well, it’s just that I’m usually busy on Saturday. I have stuff to do to get ready for work and then.....”

“What time do you work?” He had a patient look on his face and she blushed.

“I start at six,” she said, stacking the papers in front of her. “I leave home at five-thirty.”

“Okay, so if you’re home by four, does that give you enough time?”

“Well.....”

“Three. How about if I guarantee to have you back home by three?”

She glanced at him, a small smile on her face. “Okay. Three will work. Thank you.”

He smiled in return. “You’re welcome. I just want to spend a little time with you.”

She blushed.

“Good. So, let’s look at the Mikkleson job. How are we doing?”

She was immediately more at ease.
