Chapter Ten
âJust the same, David,â Julia said, âI wish youâd hear from Josephine.â
Susan stirred unhappily on the sofa, but David sounded unconcerned:
âOh, Iâm not worrying,â he said. âShe was always hopeless about writing letters. Sheâll answer when she gets around to it. Iâm not sure it isnât a good sign sheâs taking so long. It probably means theyâre off somewhere with their vacuum cleaners and the further sheâs away from her family the better. Sheâd have agreed to a divorce ages ago if it hadnât been for them.â
Julia looked at Susanâs worried face. âI expect youâre right, and of course no oneâs very business-like around Christmas time. David, now weâve waked the child, youâd better take her for a walk. Itâs too nice to stay indoors, and besides I have to write âthank youâ letters and Iâll never get it done with the two of you here distracting me.â
âSo much for us,â David laughed. âCome on, Sue, up you get. And never tell me women arenât worse bullies than men. What were you dreaming about there, anyway?â
âJust about how nice it all is. Think of having a whole week.â
Susan was wearing the ski suit Julia had given her for Christmas and they went straight out into the snow.
âYou mean you werenât daydreaming at all?â David asked. âNot even a ghost of a fairy prince?â
Susan picked up a handful of snow. âIâm going to be sorry I ever told you about that. I said I was a reformed character these days.â
âAnd a good thing, too. Itâs very humiliating to be jealous of a daydream, Iâll have you know.â He put a firm hand on the collar of her jacket. âIf you are entertaining any idea of throwing that snowball at me, Iâd get it out of my head at once. Iâm a dangerous man when roused.â
Susan looked up at him. âI bet you are. What a disconcerting thought. Will you beat me when weâre married?â
âOf course.â He took the snowball from her, aimed it carefully at a tree, and missed. âEvery night at eight, regular as clockwork. I can hardly wait. Have you told your mother yet, by the way?â
She frowned into the bright sunlight. âNo, I havenât actually. Iâm awfully superstitious, David, and Iâm scared to. I know itâs silly.â
âIt certainly is. Do you mean to say she doesnât know anything about me at all?â
Susan blushed. âIsnât it awful?â
âItâs going to be when you do tell her and serve you right. I can just see you sitting down one fine Sunday for your weekly letter. Letâs see, how would it go: âMy dear Mother: you know my tutor that I told you was such a slave-driver? Well, Iâve been sleeping with him all winter and Iâm going to marry him just as soon as he gets his divorce.â Thatâll start a fine family scene. Itâs lucky Iâve got you safe over here.â
She was blushing harder than ever. âYou make it sound so awful.â
âOh, no I donât. Itâs the beating around the bush that makes it sound awful, and you know it.
