They brought me to what they called a camarote [ship’s cabin], which was a room where there was a compañera. During the day I was there, and at night I went to sleep in Capucha [another sector of the CDC nicknamed Hood]. That compañera . . . was . . . yes . . . each time that I tal- . . . [her voice cracks, as if about to cry; the recording stops]. Well, Norita [the compañera] was a lot younger than me and I believe she had less activist experience, but in truth, she was the one who taught me how to survive at the beginning, no? She pushed around the Verdes [“Greens,” low-level guards], she had a way of treating them, like almost. . . . For me it was . . . I was impressed when I saw her telling them, “Caniche, bring me water,” “Fulanito, bring me bread.” And . . . and I saw that distinct treatment, and moreover . . . well, I was choking. I was choking, literally, I couldn’t . . . couldn’t get air. And she helped me to breathe. She taught me to breathe, to stop anxiety, anguish. She taught me to survive. And afterwards they transferred her.
