Emerson’s back.

I am so happy just to see her face and know that she is okay that I forget myself for a moment. I run up to her and I hug her so tight I swear I hear her whole spine crack. “Okay, okay, I get it.” She smiles, “You missed me.”

“Nah, not at all.” I put her down, a smirk dancing on my lips for the first time in weeks.

“Emerson,” Crusoe exhales deeply, and pushes me out the way to hug her, “don’t worry. I’ll try not to break your back like Hayden.”

“It’s fine. I just got shot in the chest, and I think Hayden may have reopened all my stitches, but besides that we’re good.” She smiles, looking directly at me to see how I am going to react.

“What do you mean-” I pause, my gaze settling on Jasper for the first time since I stepped back into the room. “What did you do to her?”

“I’m okay, Hayden. He is just here to drop me off.” Emerson says, pointedly looking towards Jasper.

“I will come and get you later this afternoon,” he says and leaves without another word.

“I will repeat this one more time Emerson, now that he is out of the room, what did he do to you?” My voice is so deep and aggressive I hardly even recognise the tone as it leaves my mouth. “I swear, I will-”

“Throw a pillow at him?” Tyler interrupts, laughing, and I almost break my neck turning around to glare at him.

“Tyler,” Aubrey chides.

“Am I wrong?” Tyler presses, smirking like he is asking me to wipe that smug look off his face with my fist.

“Hayden, it’s nothing. Annabelle shot me. That’s why I haven’t seen you guys in so long. I’ve been in some sort of coma recovering. I made Jasper take me here to see you guys after I’d woken up, after….” her voice fades into nothing, and I can tell her mind has gone off to someplace far away.

“Emerson?” Mason walks over to her, his face clearly concerned.

“Yeah,” she says, snapping her head to attention like nothing is wrong.

“Are you okay?” he asks and she nods quickly.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Well, we don’t know where you’ve been for the past few days,” Aubrey interrupts. “We thought you might be a bit more…”

“Messed up,” Tyler finishes the sentence for her. “You seem fine. Nothing is wrong with you. Now let’s get ready for the day.”

We all glare at him for pushing aside the change in Emerson that the rest of us have clearly noticed. “What? I’m hungry,” he says in an attempt to justify himself.

Everyone just stares at him in silence. “Yes,” Emerson says, “Let’s go eat. You guys can tell me everything I’ve missed out on during breakfast.”

“I guess that’s my cue to leave then,” I say, walking over to my bunk bed and putting on the simple pair of black sneakers the DDO has provided everyone with.

“Where are you going?” Emerson asks.

“Hugo likes to train with him one-on-one,” Mason explains.
