“OK”
“It is going to be hard to climb into the gun car can we rig up some type of ladder for that?”
Wes spoke up;” we can take roof ladders from the fire trucks for that. They have hooks on the tip and can be hooked over the top of the car; also, attic ladders can be used as well.”
“What is an attic ladder”, came the question back.
“It is a type of folding ladder used by firefighters to carry inside a house and gain access to the attic. When it is folded it is the size of a long 2X4 and unfolded it is about twelve inches wide, they are perfect for quick use in tight places.”
“Anything else, OK let’s issue weapons and ammo to everyone”,
Robert along with Matt and Joey opened the back of a rental truck loaded with rifles and handguns in addition to another with magazines and boxes of ammo for each. Several other boxes contained holsters and knives. As the group passed in a single line, they picked up the items and began to board the train. With the last of the work completed, it was time to be off from Canton.
Troy and James had decided to ride in the passenger cars for a few miles to help get things organized with the squads and ammo. The younger children moved into a car and watched over by Sister Carol and two of the senior citizen ladies. Mike had taken the senior men forward to the radio section explaining to them all of the different types as well as warning them not to answer anyone who called out but to only monitor the traffic. He also told them that the scout unit was called number one or Lead Dogs, the engines were number two and that the body of the train was number three.” Listen closely for any trouble calls from the lead units and pass along to the rest of the passengers, any plans for stops or things that might cause problems.” He also advised them that it could get boring at times because hours went by without hearing a sound. He also went on to explain that we do not like to answer radio calls because we have been caught in several ambushes and do not know whom to trust, so we stay off the air to avoid giving our position away. “After all”, he said, “we are tied to the track we can’t drive off in any direction we want. If they know where we are, they will move ahead and set a trap for us.” The men understood and among themselves worked out a schedule to monitor the equipment for short periods giving each other breaks
Mike entered a car and found a group sitting and talking as they loaded magazines and placed them in the marked ammo cans. The people were talking about how they were glad to be moving away from The Point and how the rescue operation was a miracle. Other conversation was about the plans for a new life.
