Electric Shock

Be very aware of your own safety if a patient is suffering or has suffered an electric shock. The source is unlikely to deactivate by itself, so you will want to immediately find the source of the current and switch it off. In a survival situation, this may be a generator; if the power is still running, it could be the mains to the building the patient is in.

The effects of the shock will depend on the voltage as well as how the current traveled through the patient’s body and their overall levels of health. Do not move the patient, but do apply a blanket to keep them warm and cover any burns with a sterile dressing. Make sure that you check for breathing and circulation, as a severe electric shock can cause the heart to stop. Perform CPR as quickly as possible.
