Targa's last day of school felt full of promise. The Atlantic glittered in the distance and boasted foamy whitecaps. The sun gleamed down without obstruction from a sky so piercingly blue it almost hurt my eyes to look at. It was the perfect day to ask another parent for a favor, and that was exactly what I had in mind when I parked the Jeep in the school's parking lot.
Turning off the engine, I took a quick glance at my appearance in the rear-view mirror. Face was clean, teeth and hair were brushed, cheeks were as pale as ever so I gave them a few good pinches to get the blood flowing. If Targa had seen me she would have asked me what on earth I was doing, as I had never been one to dwell on my appearance. The answer was simple: I needed something from another woman, so I couldn't rely on my siren allure to help me out; if anything, that allure could be a detriment.
I got out and shut the door, straightening my button-up blouse with the pattern of tiny red birds on it. Making my way through the front doors of the school, I scanned the excited lines of children for Targa.
The last day of school meant that the kids had an assembly so the teachers could dole out prizes, students could celebrate their achievements, and the administration could conclude another year of school. The double doors of the gym were propped open and kids clogged the entrance as they found their friends and sat cross-legged with their favorites. The oldest kids sat at the back of the gym and the younger ones lined the front row. Parents who wanted to attend took the chairs that lined the outskirts of the gym.
I spotted Targa on the far side of the gym, halfway back. She was seated with the usual suspects: Saxony and Georjayna.
It was Saxony's mother, Annette Cagney, who I intended to ask the favor from. I knew she'd be attending. She never missed a school event or an opportunity to volunteer. Annette was one of the few women in town who seemed mostly unfazed by my siren aura. That said, Iâd rarely spent more than a few moments in conversation with her and wasnât sure how sheâd react to what I needed.
Scanning the chairs for Annette, I spotted her on the other side, not far from our girls, talking and laughing with another mom. I tried to catch her eye but she was too engaged. Picking my way across the gym floor and avoiding small hands and fingers, I waited nearby and watched Targa and her friends.
Targa's bright blue eyes peeked up over Saxony's red hair and swept the line of chairs. Finding me, she popped up higher so I could see her better. She lifted her hand and waved, a huge smile breaking across her face. I waved back and blew her a kiss. When Annetteâs friend moved away, I stepped closer.
"Mrs. Cagney?" I touched her elbow gently.
