Qaqortoq, Greenland

Kadri paced the wooden floor of the small house on the north side of the town. Amber was playing cards with her cousin, Inuk, a young man barely able to grow stubble on his chubby cheeks. Amber’s cousin was stout like his father, but he had decided not to go to sea as a fisherman, which would break the cycle in his family for generations.

“Come and play with us,” Amber pled for the fifth time. “It’s a simple game.”

“Especially when cousin makes the rules,” the young man said.

“I have a call to make,” Kadri said.

“Cell towers suck up here,” Inuk said.

“I’ve got some bars,” Kadri said, not explaining that hers was a SAT phone.

Without explanation, Kadri wandered out to the cool, dark night. She tapped in Karl’s number and waited.

“There you are,” Karl said. “Still alive.”

“Barely,” she said. “How’s it going on your end?”

Karl explained his meeting with Zeger. When he was done, he said, “You need to get out of Greenland.”

“I’m working on it,” she said. “Sancho is trying to get us a flight. But the airport here at Qaqortoq isn’t open yet. It’s still under construction.”

“What about the place you flew into?” he asked.

“That’s Narsarsuaq,” she said. “However you pronounce that. Only way to get there is by boat.”

“Hire one.”

“Gotta have one to hire,” she declared. Then she smiled with a thought. “Back to your meeting. Did they admit to having Amber’s mother?”

“He said so without saying it outright,” Karl said. “He knew we had him dead to rights. It was a feeling out process.”

“If you send a strike team, they’re likely to kill her as you go in.”

“I know,” Karl said. “I’ve got a couple of ideas about that.”

“Such as?”

“Still working on it.”

“Fair enough.” Her eyes glanced down the road and she saw a small car’s headlights coming her way. Instinctively, she switched her phone to her left ear and touched her gun on her right hip.

“Everything alright?” he asked.

The car passed by and Kadri could hear what sounded like Greenlandic rap seeping from a cracked window, which also billowed smoke.

“Yeah,” she said. “Just being cautious.”

After a long pause, Karl said, “You’re not safe there anymore. This Zeger fellow knows you killed his first hit team. He’ll be sending more. They could already be on the way.”

“I know. That’s what I would do. But they have the same problem with logistics as us. It’s not an easy place to reach.”

“Get out,” he demanded.

“I don’t have a flight yet,” she pled. “And we can’t fly commercial.”

“I’ll get you a corporate Gulfstream,” he said. “You just need to get to the airport in Nutsack.”

“Narsarsuaq,” she corrected.

“Whatever. Get there and I’ll have a flight there by morning. Afternoon at the latest.”

Letting out a breath of exasperation, Kadri said, “Yes, sir.”

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to come across so strongly. I love you.”

“You know I love you too,” she said softly.

“Be careful,” Karl said, and then cut the call.

To herself, she said aloud, “You be careful too.”

Then she
