Given that McDonald’s was (and still is) attempting to shake off its reputation as one of the world’s largest purveyor of fattening foods, the company could not have paid for a better endorsement. The First Lady’s remarks could help the company recast itself as a combatant in the fight against the obesity epidemic rather than a culprit in the making of it.

Mrs. Obama offered even more effusive praise for the Subway sandwich chain in 2014. In response to the company’s announcement that it would undertake a three-year campaign to market healthy eating to children and offer healthier kid’s menu options, the Office of the First Lady issued a press release rhapsodizing that, “in addition to strengthening its already nutritious menu offerings to kids, SUBWAY® will launch a new series of campaigns for kids aimed at increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and will set new standards for marketing products to families.” Mrs. Obama even appeared at a Subway outlet in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the fast food chain, where she raved:

I’m excited about these initiatives not just as a First Lady, but also as a mom . . . Subway’s kids’ menu makes life easier for parents, because they know that no matter what their kids order, it’s going to be a healthy choice.54
