Astrology in the Age of Aquarius: Do the Stars Influence Our Lives?

Astrology is enjoying an ascendancy unparalleled since the fall of Babylon. The interest in astrology in America borders on obsession—more than a hundred million Americans are devoted to astrology, and another forty million dabble in it. A popular song more than a decade ago proclaimed the dawn of the "the age of Aquarius," and millions took it to heart. Belief in astrology is simply assumed in many circles, and the question "What's your sign?" has become a standard greeting.

WHAT IS ASTROLOGY?

Astrology (not to be confused with astronomy, which is the legitimate, scientific study of heavenly bodies) is an ancient practice, a pseudoscientific method of predicting events by charting the placement of the sun, moon, stars, and planets. Astrologers claim to be able to forecast and analyze events by deciphering supernatural meanings in the positions of heavenly bodies. They say that by observing the stars' and planets' proximity to one another at the moment of an individual's birth, they can predict significant events in his life. Astrologers also claim to be able to predict happenings in the world's political, economic, and social realms and to analyze personality traits of people as they are influenced by the stars.

Astrology is not new; it is one of the oldest occult practices known to man. The earliest records of Mesopotamian civilization contain references to astrology. The belief that the stars influence the courses of our lives grew out of the ancient superstition that the stars were gods, suspended in the sky to observe and determine world events. That explains why the planets and constellations all have names from pagan mythology. Early astronomers carefully charted the heavens and devised the elaborate system of the zodiac, which has remained substantially the same in modern astrology.

When astrology originated, the only known planets were Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Together with the sun and moon, they were thought to be seven deities that inhabited twelve "houses" in the sky. The houses correspond to the twelve constellations that make up the signs of the zodiac— Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn.

Astrology is big business. Every major newspaper in our country has a daily horoscope. It is estimated that in the United States more than 10,000 people are employed full-time—and at least 175,000 more persons spend at least part of their working day—in the preparation and publication of horoscopes. For the right price, individuals can order detailed personal astrological charts. The American Astrological Association claims to have sold more than half a million such customized charts between 1977 and 1981.

WHAT THE STARS TELL US

All of that, of course, is nonsense, according to the Bible. The stars cannot tell the future; they were never intended to. In no way do they influence the course of human history. God's Word is specific about what we can actually learn from the stars.

At Creation God said:

Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to
