AIMÉ To take AI’s impact on performance in manufacturing even further, look at ‘cobots’, collaborative robots that work together with human beings. This can increase productivity even more by making the collaboration between humans and machines more integrated, thus taking advantage of the strengths of each.14
Closer to home, iRobot is improving their Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner to map rooms, to then be able to identify and remember those rooms later. The robot can then adjust its cleaning habits depending on the room. This requires that the Roomba be able to chart out a room based upon a grid pattern and then segment all the different rooms and hallways. The robot must continually adjust its performance and optimize its path because homes are occupied and change constantly. People may move furniture around, drop clothing in the middle of the floor, or have mobile challenges such as pets and small children. Engineers at iRobot evaluate the performance of the robotic vacuum cleaners in the field and incorporate optimized results and improvements in the next version.15
