Chapter Twenty-Four

Andrew went over to his usual seat in the gallery. Lily greeted him with a polite nod. She had dark rings under her eyes, and she looked like she’d aged a decade since the last time he saw her. Tyler’s death seemed to have hit her hard.

He glanced at Jonas’s empty chair. He didn’t blame the guy for not showing up. It was frighteningly easy for Andrew to imagine their roles reversed. If anything were to happen to Robyn, he didn’t think he’d be able to go back to Chrystal Arena again either.

After tonight, he’d never have to set foot in this place again—and, more importantly, neither would she.

A man in an orange jacket entered the gallery, holding a walkie-talkie in his hand. “Hey, do any of you guys know what music I’m supposed to play when the Valkyrie enters? I’ve tried to contact her manager, but he hasn’t called me back. Which isn’t that surprising, since, you know . . . ” He scratched the back of his head.

“Since when do you play background music when the fighters enter?” Lily asked.

“It’s the final.” The man shrugged. “Mr. Quinn said it would be cool to have some entrance music.”

“The main theme of Swan Lake,” Andrew said. “You know, the Tchaikovsky piece. That’s the music the Valkyrie would want to enter to.”

“Seriously?” the man asked. “The other guy has some generic industrial music. Are you sure she wants some classical shit?”

“I’m sure.”

“I guess I could try to find it on Spotify,” the man said, shaking his head. He left the room, muttering something about hipsters having gone full circle.

“Mr. Quinn and his ideas,” Lily sighed. “Entrance music? That’s so cliché.”

“I’ve heard a lot about this Mr. Quinn,” Andrew said. “What’s he like?”

“You’ve never met Mr. Quinn?”

He shook his head.

“He’s about as strange as the rumors say. Very unpredictable. Really, though—you’ve never met our boss?” She tilted her head to the side, looking at him curiously. “So the rumor’s true, then. No one hired you—you just showed up out of nowhere.”

Busted.

“I wanted to be closer to Robyn during the fights, but the security guard at the backstage door refused to let me in. I improvised, and everything got out of hand after that.” He smiled apologetically. “Are you mad at me?”

Lily considered it for a few moments. “Nah. I can tell you’re a real doctor, which means you’re more than qualified to be here. I don’t like that you lied to me, but I’m not angry.” She lowered her eyes. “Life’s too short to be mad at people on principle.”

He placed a hand on her shoulder. “I’m sorry about Tyler. I wish there was something I could have done.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

They both fell silent when a drum machine accompanied by an eerie-sounding synthesizer boomed through the arena. One of the doors opened, and Drake stepped out on the passageway. His eyes were fixed on the ring, as if he didn’t even notice the massive audience.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the finale of this dramatic tournament is finally here!” the commentator yelled into his microphone.
