They were hard years for Donne and Anne. There were many moments in which the flashes of his old relishing self flared up again – some of the love poetry certainly dates from this period, though it’s impossible to say how much. There were days with glee in them, but also days in which his new, unfamiliar work of marriage and consistency and obligation felt as onerous as any job he had ever done. A letter written a few years later to Goodere catches exactly the up-and-down sweep of Donne’s mood:

Sometimes when I find12 my self transported with jollity, and love of company, I hang leads at my heels; and reduce to my thoughts my fortunes, my years, the duties of a man, of a friend, of a husband, of a father, and all the incumbencies of a family: when sadness dejects me, either I countermine it with another sadness, or I kindle squibs [fireworks] about me again, and fly into sportfulness and company.
