Chapter 22

Two days later, they were ready to go.

James wanted to leave immediately, but Calico told him that plans had to be finalized, and they were waiting for the rest of the Supers to return from a mission. So he waited two long days, excited and nervous. He was close to Derek; he could feel it.

The rest of the Supers returned on the first night. James and Rocky were getting a tour of the base from Katie when Afectrus, Mungus, and Myrcellus walked through what seemed to be the main entrance—a large, metal door with a complex locking mechanism. It swung open, sending in a howl of frigid air. The three Supers wore thick, black suits lined with fur, their faces red and their windswept hair a mess around their heads.

They all greeted James warmly, if not distantly. Mungus was the only one to embrace him. The short, perpetually bedraggled man smiled and pulled James into a hug, patting him heavily on the back.

Most people expected James to be close to all of the Supers, but the truth was, he’d never really known them well—in fact, the only Supers he’d ever really spent time with were Avus and Leo, who were the closest to Derek. It had surprised James, at first, that the Supers weren’t all friends, but he supposed it made sense. The Supers were a team, not a family. Rocky wasn’t close with everybody on his football team, was he?

The three Supers bid them farewell and headed toward the conference room to debrief. Katie finished the tour, showing them around the compound. It was surprisingly large and well-fitted, with a kitchen, a room for each Super, a small library with shelves of books, and even a rec room with a ping-pong table and a TV.

“Who built all this?” Rocky asked, picking up a ping-pong paddle and flipping it in his hand.

Katie shrugged. “The Supers have been around for decades. It makes sense they’d build something hidden like this.”

As they walked past the library on the way to the infirmary, James noticed a door they hadn’t been through at the end of the hallway. It was the only door he’d seen so far that had a keycard reader next to it.

“What’s through there?” he asked.

“Not sure,” Katie said. “Auri said only Supers are allowed through.”

“Must be where they keep the bodies,” Rocky joked.

James didn’t dwell on it. He figured there were plenty of private files and lots of information the Supers didn’t want a couple of kids snooping through or messing with. They returned to the infirmary, which was now just their dormitory. Auri had offered for them to sleep in the missing Supers’ empty rooms, but all three of them had agreed not to. The idea of sleeping in a missing person’s bed wasn’t very appealing.

Now, the day was upon them.

After a quick breakfast in the kitchen, they met the Supers in the conference room. All six Supers were there—Calico in the middle, surrounded by Afectrus, Tonitrus, Mungus, Myrcellus, and Auri.
