Chapter 14

Sunshine sat facing the door, wishing she’d gone to the gun shop and bought something for protection but knowing Sepher held some weird power over her, and if she had a gun, she might not be able to pull the trigger. She hated Sepher with everything she had, but he still had power to abuse her.

Maybe it was the fear he induced. He knew exactly what buttons to push to make her bend to his will. He knew how to get to her. Knew how to slip in under her defenses and force her to do his bidding.

The office she worked for had been great, understanding that she’d been kidnapped and wasn’t just blowing off work for the fun of it. She was taking the rest of the week off then coming in the next week. She hadn’t told them everything, not about Sepher getting away. They didn’t need to know her brother was still out there and might attack at any moment.

She closed her eyes, wishing the words he said would go away. If he’d tied her up and beat her, raped her, she could have easily turned that anger on him. Instead, he held her and stroked her hair, telling her how much he loved her as he used stories from their childhood to guilt her into not rebelling against him.

She tried to get away once, and that’s how Minx had found her. Tears streamed down her face. She missed Minx. He was perfect for her. Too bad she was a tragedy and the last thing he needed.

A knock sounded at her door, and she jumped. She must have drifted off at some point and hadn’t heard anyone coming down the hall. The knock sounded again, and fear twisted higher, making it hard to breathe.

She stood, almost groaning as her muscles protested the movement. She’d been holding herself stiff since escaping Sepher, and now she was feeling the effects. If this was Sepher, she didn’t know what she would do. But Sepher wouldn’t bother with knocking. He would break in like usual.

“Sunshine, it’s Jenna.”

Her voice made Sunshine pick up the pace. She pulled the door open without checking the peephole, glad that it really was Jenna and that she was alone. The look on her face told Sunshine that she wasn’t here just as a friendly visit. Jenna had seen Ethan. Her shoulders sank, and she closed her eyes, trying to fight the tears threatening to spill.

“He isn’t going to give up on you,” Jenna said as she wrapped her arms tight around Sunshine’s back, holding her close as they both shed tears.

The door shut behind them, and Sunshine heard the lock turn, so she knew they were safe. She needed that safety. A shudder ripped through her, and Jenna held her tighter.

“He loves you,” Jenna said.

Pain sliced through her. “I’m bad for him.”

“He can take care of himself.”

“Sepher almost killed him.”

Jenna pushed her to arm’s length. “Do you care for him?”

Sunshine tried to lie, but the words died on her tongue.
