Ethan
It was still dark outside when I woke up the morning of the mission. Weâd managed to get the location of the drug traffickerâs base the evening before from a teenaged kid named Marcus who had agreed to talk to us in exchange for a deal for leniency. After weâd gotten the information we needed, Officer Walker and I had come up with a plan to hit the base early in the morning, which was when most of the men were bound to be there. It would be riskier that way, but weâd be able to make a larger arrest.
I reached across the bed toward the nightstand where my phone was charging. It was a little after five in the morning, a whole hour before the time Iâd set my alarm for. There was no point in trying to go back to sleep, though. My mind was already far too active going over the details of the mission for that to happen.
I didnât really want to get out of bed. Tessaâs head was nestled on my shoulder, and one of her arms was draped loosely over my chest. Outside, I could hear the waves of the ocean as they softly crashed against the shore. I felt immensely comfortable, and part of me really did want to close my eyes and just let myself drift off again.
âEthan?â Tessaâs sleepy voice broke through the silence. âAre you okay?â
I turned to peer down at her. It was too dark for me to see her face clearly, but I could tell that she was looking back at me.
âSorry,â I replied. âDid I wake you up?â
âNot really,â she yawned. âI donât know. I just kind of woke up, and I could tell you were awake too. What time is it?â
âEarly,â I replied. âItâs still dark. You should go back to sleep.â
âWhy arenât you asleep then?â she countered.
âCanât,â I replied simply. âToo awake already.â
âThen Iâll get up too,â she replied as she slowly sat up and stretched.
âYou donât have to,â I replied, though I was secretly glad. While I felt a bit selfish, the idea of having her company was more appealing than just waiting around for an hour by myself.
âI know.â She smiled at me. âBut Iâm going to, anyway. If you canât sleep, it means youâre nervous about the mission, right? What kind of person would I be if I just ignored you and went to sleep knowing that?â
âI wouldnât call it ânervous,ââ I replied as I sat up. âExcited is probably a better word.â
âExcited?â She giggled. âExcited about marching into a house full of drug traffickers?â
âAdventureâs in my blood,â I replied with a grin.
âAdrenaline junkie.â She rolled her eyes. My vision had adjusted enough to the darkness so I could see the way she was smiling at me. âAnyway, since weâre up, why donât we have some breakfast before we head out?â
âWe?â I repeated incredulously. âWhat do you mean before âweâ head out?â
âWhat part of that was unclear to you?â Tessa replied. âYou
