I notice two things once I stop screaming.
One, that I can suck in water through my mouth and not feel like I'm drowning.
Two, that I can hear myself screaming, like I'm on land.
"That was always going to be the scariest, worst part about it," Adria says, drawing my attention to her. Sure enough, there's no gurgle or warble to her voice. She sounds as clear as if we were back on the beach. "Having the water rush into your mouth."
"I can't believe I'm not dying," I find myself saying. My speaking voice works just as fine.
Adria leans into me, her eyes kind and warm. "I've told you -- you're a mer. And this is where you were always meant to be."
Always meant to be.
No, I'm meant to be at a frozen yogurt place with my two best friends, laughing about school or discussing how hard the latest AP Biology test was. Not into the depths of the water.
Not like this.
Then I remember that both Dylan and Samantha are my friends out of duty -- that they were there because they were commanded to do so.
And that, frankly, makes me feel like shit. Like I'm that person in social settings that no one wants to hang out with, but people talk to out of a sense of obligation or being nice. Dylan and Samantha were never my friends. I am just a job to them.
Which makes my ever-present crush on Dylan a huge problem that I need to break myself out of.
"Why do I not have a fish tail?" I ask. "Or gills?" I rub behind my ears, seeing if I suddenly have gills there like I saw in a movie once. Thankfully, I don't find anything out of the ordinary there, but that doesn't tell me how I'm able to breathe underwater without difficulty right now.
Something crosses Adria's expression as she looks at me now, and I barely catch it before she masks it with a smile.
"You do, but you're not in your mer form," she says softly.
I eye her warily. "Dylan told me that all mers have at least two forms."
Adria gives Dylan an unreadable look. "Did he now?"
He nods, and she sighs. "We do," she says.
"So I'd look like Mrs. Hudson underwater?" I remember how alien she looked to me when I woke up. How inhuman she appeared.
Adria lets out a breath. "Not quite. You're a high mer, Gwen, blending the best of the creatures of the land and sea. What's that entertainment program you were talking about, Dylan?"
"You'd look more like the little mermaid," Dylan clarifies for her.
She nods. "That's it."
"So, I'd have a fish tail and a human body," I murmur.
"Mostly. Of course, humans wouldn't get it right. But you're a blend and a bridge between our two worlds."
"Okay," I say. "So how do I get my tail? Do I do some sort of chant?"
"That's something to try later. It's... a bit harder than changing your hair color." To illustrate, her hair changes from blue to pink in a split second.
