Chapter Nine

Nia and I jumped out of bed and scrambled around to find our clothes.

“Why must there always be something?” Nia wondered as she dug through one of the nightstands, and after she retrieved a long-sleeved top and a pair of leather breeches, she hastily began to dress herself. “It’s our honeymoon, for Maker’s sake, I was hoping we could finally catch a break.”

“Unfortunately, war doesn’t sleep,” I groaned as I pulled on my trousers. “And apparently, neither do we.”

“It has to be a rift opening,” Nia sighed, and she started to braid her long silver hair away from her irritated face. “An alarm of that magnitude isn’t used for a minor inconvenience.”

“We need to get there as quickly as possible,” I agreed. “I’m not sure how well-equipped Adorna is for an attack, but if the sights from yesterday were any indication, they could use all of the help they can get.”

I strapped my bandolier over my chest and double-checked the essence crystals within. I had no clue what we were walking into, so I needed to make sure I was prepared for anything that could be thrown at us.

“It’s hard to say.” Nia shook her head. “This place is peaceful. It doesn’t seem like they’ve been affected too much by anything.”

“There has to be at least one banisher here, hopefully a few other mages,” I remarked, and I sat down on the bed and pulled on my thickest boots

“And if not?” Nia asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I don’t know,” I admitted with a sigh, “but we owe it to the people of Adorna to figure it out anyways.”

“You’re always a hero, farm boy.” Nia smirked. “Everywhere we go, everything we do. You’re always saving lives.”

“You love it.” I winked at my wife. “Though if you recall all of those times, I had you at my side, so I can’t take all of the credit.”

As I laced up my boots, Nia stood in front of the glass wall and stared out at the forest beyond us.

“I don’t even want to suggest this, but what if we’re walking right into a trap?” she wondered, and I stopped in my tracks.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“We don’t know if this is just a normal rift situation, or another Archon awakening. I know the latter is the more extreme of those options, but it’s not something we can rule out.”

“It’s a risk we have to be willing to take.” I shrugged. “If people are in trouble, we have to save them.”

“I know we do, Gryff, trust me, I do,” Nia said, and then the elementalist turned around to face me. “I just want to make sure we’re being smart about this.”

“Nia, there’s nothing we can’t handle,” I assured her. “But I don’t think it’s an Archon. Sera or one of the others most likely would have mentioned if it was. They can usually sense it straight away.”

“Well, they aren’t exactly reliable, or even fully honest,” Nia sighed. “To be frank, if you hadn’t captured them, they’d still be trying to destroy the world.
