The trees grew taller, their trunks wider. There was a primordial stillness in this place, somehow untouched by time. Even the most powerful fae knew it was foolish to travel in these woods alone. If I'd had any other choice, I wouldn’t have been. My only hope was that its reputation would dissuade my trackers from following me here.

The light began to change, becoming the golden hues of the last hour of sunlight. I needed to find shelter. Soon.

The ancient beings that lived here, both animal and faerie, were of story and legend. I wasn’t sure how effective my weapons would be against them, but at least the arrows were rowan wood. Better than nothing.

The light continued to fade as I came upon an unusual tree. It was larger than the others, one of the roots lifted, the space just large enough for me to fit through. After checking for animals, satisfied that none called this place home, I crawled inside.

Once in the little cave, I cast a silencing ward around the space as well as a trigger at the entrance, just in case anything did decide to come in here as I slept. This depleted some of the magic I’d gained back since this morning, a necessary expenditure, but I would recover more in the night if I was able to sleep securely. I slowly laid on my side, bringing my knees up and using my arm to support my head. Due to it being summer, the night would be chilly but not so cold as needing to risk a fire for warmth. A blessing. Fires and smoke were too easy to track.

My mind reeled in the stillness. A lone tear streamed down my face.

Lock it down. Don’t break. Not now.

Eventually, sleep found me.

It didn’t take long for the nightmares to come.
