“I’ve always thought you looked sexy all dressed up,” a female voice says.

Alan looks up from the funeral card he’s reading. His eyes feel like they’re playing tricks on him. She wore a black skirt and top. Her hair pulled back and braided just the way he had remembered. Only it was a lot longer, and the rest of her had filled in quite nicely.

He had been waiting all day to see Kerri, and now that she was standing here in front of him, he had gone blank. All he could do was stare at her in awe. She walks to him with a smirk and puts her hand under his chin and closes his mouth.

“You might wanna close that before you catch flies,” she says with a smile.

Kerri leans in and kisses him softly on the lips.

“How are you, Cariño?” She asks.

“I’m...good,” Alan says. “It’s really good to see you.”

“You too. It’s just sad that it’s under these conditions. Poor Mimi. What happened was just so tragic.”

“Yeah.”

That was the only reply he could offer without getting all choked up.

“I’m going to go pay my respects,” she says. “You’re staying for a while, right?”

“I’ll be here.”

“Good,” Kerri says with a big smile. “We’re all going back to my house afterward. I hope you’ll join us.”

“Sure,” he says.

Did she just say going back to her house? She must still live in the neighborhood. Alan looked around for signs to see if she was there with another man. Did she have a boyfriend or maybe even a husband? He didn’t see a ring on her finger, but he needed to make sure. Alan watched her as she walked across the room to the casket. While Kerri kneeled at the side of the coffin to pray,

Alan could not take his eyes off her. It was like an Angel praying to God. Could it be possible that she had become more beautiful with age? When Kerri had finished praying, she stood up and kissed Ernesto on his forehead and cried. It was a tragic end for such a dear, sweet friend.

Ernesto had become a police officer and a devout Christian. One night he left his house to run to the store. On his way, he was jumped and mugged by two men with knives. Ernesto willingly gave them his money, but the men still found it necessary to beat and stab him repeatedly just for kicks. A police car happened to be driving by at the time, and the officers chased the men down. They caught the men responsible, but Ernesto died on his way to the hospital.

Alan recognizes the face of a small-framed young man in his late twenties who enters the viewing room. It is a face that hasn’t changed much in years. Ray had grown from a shy little boy into a clean-cut man. He walked in and directly to his sister, who rushes into his arms. Julio drags Ray by the arm over Alan so that he could say hello.

“Look who’s here,” Julio says, to Ray.
