Lucy’s Mother

Lucy’s mother also has a complex, at times subtly avaricious relationship with both money and love. By continually gossiping about other people in their hometown, particularly in relation to how much money they have, Lucy’s mother demonstrates feelings of inadequacy about her own financial situation. She keeps money, especially other people’s money, at the top of her mind, and chooses to share these stories with Lucy while she’s in the hospital instead of telling her stories about her own family. Clearly, her priorities lie with envious gossip. Lucy’s mother is unable to show love or affection to her daughter, even when Lucy is ill or when she herself is dying. This is the character flaw of someone who is not equipped to be a good mother. It may be that regret that causes Lucy’s mother to push her daughter away, as suggested by her admission while Lucy was in the hospital that she regretted not protecting her children better from poverty and cruelty.
